GÜZELDEN DE ÖTE: SHIZUTERU UEDA’NIN DOĞA ESTETİĞİ VE JAPON SANATLARI

Year 2023, Issue: 36, 277 - 294, 27.11.2023
https://doi.org/10.53844/flsf.1334321

Abstract

MORE THAN BEAUTIFUL: SHIZUTERU UEDA’S AESTHETICS OF NATURE AND THE JAPANESE ARTS

Year 2023, Issue: 36, 277 - 294, 27.11.2023
https://doi.org/10.53844/flsf.1334321

Abstract

This article aims to investigate the main aspects of the aesthetics of nature of Shizuteru Ueda, a third-generation representative of the Kyoto School. To this end, Ueda’s definition of the concept of nature, the senses in which he uses the word shizen, his discussions on beauty and on the relationship between nature and the Japanese arts are examined. Ueda’s arguments display the common defining characteristics of the Kyoto School’s aesthetics of nature and they put forward conclusions that lead to a reevaluation of certain assumptions about not only the beauty of nature but also the definition of art and aesthetics in general. Moreover, they reveal the framework for how the Kyoto School’s aesthetics of nature, in which the Japanese arts are considered as a way of attaining nature as it really is, may contribute to the discussions on the appreciation and preservation of nature in contemporary environmental aesthetics.
