Abstract

Art is an important action that has continued its existence in the lives of human beings throughout history. As art is being realized as a part of life, it is also observed that individuals try to make sense of art. What is art or what art is, in other words, the nature of art and in connection with this who the “artist” is, the characteristics that distinguish artists from other people have been wondered throughout human history and these have been tried to be understood by both philosophers and artists. Especially in the modern period, art itself has become the subject of art and the artistic production process has been scrutinised in various works. In the field of literature, the novels called "künstlerroman", a German term meaning "artist novels", are an example of this. These are novels in which artists are the central figures and art is the focus of the subject.
In the theater, which is one of the thousands of years old branches of art, also deals with the process of artistic production, art problems and artists. Nevertheless, no such term like künstlerroman exists to cover works of theatre in which art or artists are involved. In this article, in this context, it was examined how artist figures are reflected to the Republican period Turkish theatre through three plays that have representational value. It was discussed in this study Necip Fazıl Kısakürek’s Bir Adam Yaratmak (Creating a Man), Haldun Taner’s ...Ve Değirmen Dönerdi (And the Mill Would Turn) and Selim İleri’s Cahide / Ölüm ve Elmas (Cahide / Death and Diamonds) for examination. It was examined the lives, production processes and problems of three artists from different branches of art through this plays. In Bir Adam Yaratmak a writer, in ...Ve Değirmen Dönerdi a painter and in Cahide / Ölüm ve Elmas an actress appears as the central person. The common point of different artist figures in the selected plays that they struggle with problems in their artistic and personal lives and that they stucked between their art and life.
