Authorship Principles & Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

Authorship Principles

1. Substantial Contributions

Authorship should be attributed to individuals who have made substantial and meaningful contributions to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the study. All authors should have actively participated in the research process and should be able to explain and defend the research work.

2. Authorship Criteria

Authorship should be limited to those who meet all of the following criteria:

- Conception or design of the study or analysis and interpretation of data.
- Drafting or critical revision of the manuscript for intellectual content.
- Final approval of the version to be published.

Contributors who do not meet all three of these criteria may be acknowledged in the acknowledgment section, but they should not be listed as authors.

3. Acknowledgment of Contributions

Individuals who have contributed to the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship should be appropriately acknowledged in the manuscript's acknowledgment section. This may include individuals who provided technical assistance, contributed to data collection, or offered valuable insights without meeting the full authorship criteria.

4. Authorship Order

The order of authors should be determined based on the significance and nature of their contributions to the research, with the first author typically being the individual who made the most substantial contribution. The corresponding author should also be clearly identified and must be responsible for correspondence related to the manuscript.

5. Changes in Authorship

Any changes in authorship during the revision process must be thoroughly justified and explained in the submission. Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, changes in authorship are generally not permitted.

6. Guarantor Role

One author should be designated as the guarantor or corresponding author. The guarantor is responsible for ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of the work are appropriately addressed and should be the primary contact for the manuscript.

7. Declaration of Conflicts of Interest

All authors should disclose any potential conflicts of interest related to the research. These may include financial interests, affiliations, or other factors that could influence the research outcomes or their interpretation.

8. Transparency and Ethical Conduct

Authors must ensure the transparency and ethical conduct of their research, including accurate reporting of methods and results, the appropriate citation of prior work, and the adherence to ethical guidelines and regulations governing research involving human subjects or animals.

9. Compliance with Journal Guidelines

Authors should adhere to all submission and publication guidelines of the Galatasaray University Journal of Communication, including those related to manuscript formatting, reference styles, and ethical standards.

Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

At Galatasaray University Journal of Communication, we align our ethical responsibilities for authors with high standards. These principles underscore our commitment to fostering a research environment of integrity, transparency, and scholarly excellence.

1. Originality and Transparency

Authors submitting their work to our journal are expected to ensure the originality of their research. We endorse the principles of transparency, ensuring that research findings are accurate and trustworthy. This entails:

- Submitting manuscripts exclusively to our journal for consideration.
- Disclosing any prior publication or overlapping material while explaining how new work builds upon prior research.
- Avoiding "salami-slicing" or fragmenting studies to artificially increase the number of submissions.
- Presenting research results honestly and without any form of manipulation, including image-based alterations.
- Upholding discipline-specific rules for data acquisition, selection, and processing.
- Acknowledging and properly citing the work of others to avoid plagiarism.

2. Responsible Resource Utilization

Authors should obtain the necessary permissions for using software, questionnaires, surveys, and scales in their studies. Research articles and non-research articles must cite relevant literature to support their claims. Excessive self-citation is discouraged.

3. Professional Conduct

Authors must avoid making unfounded statements about individuals or entities that could be perceived as personal attacks or allegations. The manuscript should clearly identify research with potential public health or national security implications.

4. Authorship and Collaboration

Authors are encouraged to ensure that the authorship group, corresponding author, and author order are accurately represented at the time of submission. Changes to authorship during the revision stages should be justified and explained. Once a manuscript is accepted, changes to authorship are generally not permitted.

5. Data Verification

Authors must be prepared to provide relevant documentation or data if requested to verify the validity of their results. Sensitive or proprietary information should be handled with care and excluded as necessary.

6. Respect for Third-Party Rights

Authors must respect third-party rights, including copyright and moral rights.

7. Allegations of Misbehavior

In cases where misbehavior or alleged fraud is suspected, the Journal and Publisher will conduct investigations following established guidelines. If valid concerns are identified, measures may include manuscript rejection, the issuance of errata, expressions of concern, or article retraction. Retracted articles will be marked with a "retracted" watermark and an explanation.

8. Correcting Errors

Authors have to rectify significant errors or inaccuracies in their published articles. The correction process may involve issuing a correction or retraction, with transparency regarding the impacted sections of the article.

9. Reviewer Suggestions

Authors are encouraged to suggest suitable reviewers while submitting their manuscripts. Reviewers should be independent and have no conflicts of interest with the work. Diversity in reviewer selection is encouraged, encompassing experts from different countries and institutions.

By adhering to these ethical responsibilities, authors contribute to the scholarly rigor and integrity we uphold at Galatasaray University Journal of Communication. Your dedication to these principles ensures the credibility and impact of your research in the academic community.

AI Authorship

At Galatasaray University Journal of Communication, we recognize the valuable role that AI tools play in modern research, offering innovative solutions in various aspects of scholarly work. However, it is essential to clarify the ethical and authorship considerations regarding the use of AI tools in the context of our journal.

Despite their significant contributions, AI tools (Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT) cannot fulfill the authorship requirements within our journal. This is because they lack the capacity to take responsibility for the submitted work, assert conflicts of interest, or manage copyright and licensing agreements. As non-legal entities, AI tools operate as tools or resources for human authors' disposal. Authors who utilize AI tools in their research, whether for manuscript writing, image or graphical element production, or data collection and analysis, must maintain high transparency. In the Materials and Methods section or a similar section of the paper, authors must disclose how the AI tool was employed and specify which tool was used. It is crucial to emphasize that, within the scope of our journal, authors are fully responsible for the content of their manuscripts. This includes all aspects, whether produced by human authors or AI tools. Authors are thus accountable for upholding the highest standards of publication ethics and ensuring that their work complies with our journal's policies. Authors are responsible for ensuring that AI tools in their research adhere to ethical principles, avoid biases or discrimination, and maintain the highest standards of integrity. Any potential ethical concerns arising from AI tool usage must be addressed within the paper. Authors should acknowledge and manage any potential conflicts of interest related to AI tool usage and take the necessary steps to secure appropriate copyright and licensing agreements for AI-generated content.
