MEDYA ARKEOLOJİSİ: DİSİPLİNE EDİLMEMİŞ BİR DİSİPLİNİ TARTIŞMAK

Öz

Bu makale, medya arkeolojisinin bir disiplin olup olmadığını tartışmaktadır. Medya arkeolojisinin bir disiplin olup olmadığını tartışmadan önce, üç farklı alana odaklanmaktadır. Bu üç farklı alan, medya arkeolojisinin üç farklı dalıdır. Ardından medya arkeolojisine dair dört farklı yaklaşıma odaklanır: Yeni içinde eski; eski içinde yeni; periyodik-döngüsel; kopuşlar ya da kırılmalar ve sürekliliği olmayanlar. Ayrıca, bu makale, Goddard (2015) tarafından geliştirilen iki temel varsayımı dikkate almaktadır. Birincisi, medya arkeolojisi, modern medya teorisinde ve medya tarihinde ‘epistemolojik bir kopuş ya da kırılma’ olarak düşünülmelidir. İkincisi, medya arkeolojisi, medya nesnelerinin, sistemlerinin ve süreçlerinin maddesel ekolojileri üzerinde yoğunlaşmaktadır. Alanyazında görülebileceği üzere, medya arkeolojisi hem modern medya teorisinde ve medya tarihinde ‘epistemolojik bir kopuşun ya da kırılmanın’ kanıtıdır hem de ‘materyalist bir epistemoloji’ olarak medya çalışmalarına katkıda bulunmaktadır. En nihayetinde, medya arkeolojisi bir disiplin olarak tartışmalı bir statüye sahiptir ve disipline edilmemiş bir disiplindir.

MEDIA ARCHAEOLOGY: DISCUSSING AN UNDISCIPLINED DISCIPLINE

Öz

This article discusses whether media archaeology is a discipline. Before discussing whether media archaeology is a discipline, it focuses on three distinct fields. These three distinct fields are three distinct branches of media archaeology. Afterward, it focuses on four different approaches for the media archaeology: The old in the new; the new in the old; cyclical; ruptures and discontinuities. Moreover, this article considers two key hypotheses developed by Goddard (2015). Firstly, media archaeology can be thought of ‘an epistemological break’ within modern media theory and media history. Secondly, media archaeology concentrates on material ecologies of media objects, systems and processes. As it can be seen in literature, media archaeology is both the proof of ‘an epistemological break’ in modern media theory and media history, and contributes to media studies as ‘a materialist epistemology’. In conclusion, media archaeology has a problematic status as a discipline, and is an undisciplined discipline.
