How Does Ethical Perception Change in Business Environment?

Abstract

This research aims to study principal ethics dimensions and to examine the impact of variables such as the income, education level, the position in the organization and the nature of the organization. Thus, this article attempts to make a list of ethics dimensions by a factor analysis following a survey realized with managers and employees. Ethical perceptions of managers and individuals in other positions in the organization are compared according to these dimensions and the effects of some variables are studied by a regression analysis. The study determined 5 principal factors on ethics. The results show that concerning the gifts and promotion of friends and family members, the managers have an utilitarian vision and there is no significant difference between managers and individuals in other positions. But, relatively high ethical levels claimed by managers are also affected by the fact that the risk of unethical behavior is bigger for the individuals with higher, income. The influence that the managers have on others by their ethical behavior is also noteworthy. The importance of Human Resources Management is deducted as ethical managers should be recruited, chosen and withheld in the organization.

Abstract

L’objectif de cette recherche est d’étudier les dimensions éthiques principales et d’examiner l’impact des différents variables comme le revenu, le niveau d’éducation, la position de l’individu dans l’organisation et la nature de l’organisation. Cet article tente de dresser un bilan des dimensions éthiques par l’analyse factorielle suite à une enquête réalisée auprès des directeurs et employées. Les perceptions éthiques des directeurs et des individus dans d’autres positions ont été comparées en termes de ces dimensions et l’effet de certains variables est étudié par une analyse de régression. L’étude a déterminé cinq facteurs principaux reliés aux pratiques éthiques. Les résultats font de plus ressortir que sur l’éthique concernant les cadeaux et la promotion des amis ou des membres de famille, les directeurs ont une vision utilitaire et il n’y a aucune différence significative entre les directeurs et les individus dans d’autres positions sur ces facteurs. Mais, les niveaux éthiques relativement élevés réclamés par les directeurs sont aussi affectés du fait que le risque du comportement non-éthique est plus grand pour eux qui ont un revenu plus élevé. L’influence qu’exercent les directeurs, par leur comportement éthique, sur les autres est aussi marquante. L’on peut en déduire l’importance du rôle de la direction des ressources humaines car des directeurs éthiques doivent être recrutés, choisis, formés, et retenus dans l’organisation.

Abstract

Bu araştırma temel etik boyutlarını araştırmayı ve gelir, eğitim düzeyi, organizasyondaki pozisyon ve organizasyonunyapısı gibi değişkenlerin etkisini incelemeyi hedeflemektedir. Bu nedenle makale, yöneticiler ve çalışanlar ile gerçekleştirilen bir anketin ardından, faktör analizi ile etik boyutlarının bir listesini yapmıştır. Yöneticiler ve organizasyonda diğer pozisyonlarda görevli bireylerin etik algılamaları bu boyutlara göre karşılaştırılmıştır ve bazı değişkenlerin etkisi regresyon analizi ile incelenmiştir. Çalışmada etik ile ilgili 5 temel faktör belirlenmiştir. Sonuçlar; hediye, arkadaş ve aile bireylerinin terfisi hususunda yöneticilerin faydacı bir vizyona sahip olduğunu göstermektedir ve bu konularda yöneticiler ile diğer pozisyonlarda görev yapan kişiler arasında anlamlı bir fark belirlenmemiştir. Ancak, yöneticiler tarafından talep edilen nispeten yüksek etik değerler, etik olmayan davranış riskinin daha yüksek gelire sahip kişiler için daha büyük olduğu gerçeğinden etkilenmektedir. Yöneticilerin, etik davranışları ile diğerleri üzerinde yarattığı etki de dikkat çekicidir. İnsan Kaynakları Yönetimi, etik yöneticilerin seçimi, istihdam edilmesi ve organizasyonda tutulması açısından önem arz etmektedir.
