Bio
The main emphasis of my research is on the conceptual foundations of the biological sciences and ontology of living systems, specifically how organisms differ from other types of sophisticated organized systems, such as machines, and what this distinction means in terms of epistemology. My work may be understood as a methodical attempt to revive an organism-centered philosophy of biology that can overcome the limitations of biological theory from the second half of the 20th century, which were mechanicist and reductionist. Long ago, I had a strong interest in general philosophical debates about science as well as the historical interplay between philosophical and scientific concepts of nature. In addition biomedical ethics, neurophilosophy, and consciousness are some of my key research interests. My research interests also cover the regions where the theories of evolution and the philosophy of consciousness meet.
