The Everyday Life And Social Network Sites: Twitter or “Pit Pit Net”

Abstract

In this study, I look at Twitter, a new media product and social network site, and its relation to the everyday life of the Twitter users in Turkey. I consider the users/consumers as the producers of what they consume within the flow of everyday life. Through the rich qualitative data, I try to answer the questions such as the following: How, and in what ways is Twitter being used?; How often and for what purposes do the users use the site?; How do the Twitter users perceive and make sense of the site's content within their daily routines? To answer the questions above, I utilize a multiple methodological approach that brings content analysis and online ethnography together. Based on the data collected from the field, there is a complex and reciprocal relationship between Twitter and the everyday life of the users. One of the important characteristics of Twitter that makes it popular amongst its users is its flexible nature, which allows its users to personalize and customize the ways in which they produce and consume the content along with their daily routines.
