The uneven transnationalization of “Turkish” information: The case of the media coverage of Turkey in France

Abstract

This article aims to study contemporary processes of production and transnational circulation of news, from a study of the “Turkish news” in French generalist media. After roughly characterized the average position of Turkey in highly competitive international field of news, the first part examines the geopolitics of this market by showing how, through the study of the population of the foreign media correspondents in Turkey, it is dominated by a few media and especially some countries, which today provide the bulk of the raw material of the information. The second part, which deals with the presence of the French media in Turkey, shows its relative weakness but also the fact that they are intended primarily for social groups heavily endowed with cultural and/or economic capital. The third shows, from a content study, the overall homogeneity of journalistic productions on Turkey around some mainstream themes (human rights, Islam, etc.) building a social space of these productions. This article is based on a survey by interviews and observations in Turkey and a study of productions of the print and broadcast media in France between the 1980s and the 2000s.
