From Observations to Actions: Towards a Non-Sexist Media in Turkey

Year 2009, Issue: 10, 33 - 51, 01.06.2009

Abstract

Beginning from the 90s, the media in Turkey which began to organize under a new political economy — both with the effect of this structural transformation and as a part of the dominant and pervasive social framerepresent women in various texts (from newspapers to television series) in a way that sometimes ends with serious violations of human rights. However it is not before the end of 2006 that various women's organizations start supporting a structure which opposes the incessant reproduction of sexist discourse in the media. The present research aims to explore these two dimensions of the subject. In the first part, different types of texts produced by the four major media (dally press, radio, television and Internet) are examined by the method of discourse analysis accompanied by a comparative review of the media to see how and in what proportions women are represented in these texts, and always by the same comparative view, the position of women employed in different media is analyzed. In the second part of our study, organizational history and working structure of MEDIZ (Women's Mediawatch Group), founded in 2007 with the specific objective to fight against sexism in the media are evaluated by a qualitative-ethnographic method (participant observation, interviews in-depth) using also as an additional paradigm, organizational opportunities provided by the computer-mediated communication.

Year 2009, Issue: 10, 33 - 51, 01.06.2009

Abstract

Year 2009, Issue: 10, 33 - 51, 01.06.2009

Abstract

Türkiye'de, 90'lı yıllarla birlikte yeni bir ekonomi politik çerçevesinde yapılanmaya başlayan medya, gerek bu yapısal dönüşümün etkisi, gerek genel siyasal — toplumsal egemen söylem doğrultusunda, gazete manşetlerinden, televizyon dizilerine çok farklı metinlerde kadınları temsil etme biçimleriyle, kimi zaman ciddi hak ihlallerine varacak bir tutum sergilemektedir. Farklı kadın örgütlerinin medyada cinsiyetçi söylemin sürekli yeniden üretilmesine karşı duracak bir yapılanmaya destek vermesi ise 2006 yılının sonlarına denk düşmektedir. Burada bulgularını paylaşacağımız araştırma, konunun bu iki boyutunu irdelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. İlk bölümde, hem belli başlı dört medyadan (basın, radyo, televizyon ve internet) önem derecesi doğrultusunda saptanan metin türleri içinde kadınların ne oranda ve hangi biçimlerde temsil edildiği medyalar arası karşılaştırmaya da olanak verecek biçimde söylem analizi tekniğiyle çözümlenmiş; hem de aynı karşılaştırmalı perspektiften hareketle kadın çalışanların farklı medyalardaki konumları irdelenmiştir. Çalışmamızın ikinci bölümünde ise, 2007 yılında kurulan ve özgül amacı medyada cinsiyetçilikle mücadele olan MEDİZ'in (Kadınların Medya İzleme Grubu) örgütsel tarihi ve çalışma biçimleri, niteliksel-etnografik yöntem aracılığıyla (katılımcı gözlem, derinlemesine görüşme), ek bir paradigma olarak bilgisayar dolayımlı iletişimin sağladığı toplumsallaşma, dayanışma ve örgütlenme olanaklarının da incelenmesiyle bir arada değerlendirilmiştir. anahtar kelimeler: toplumsal cinsiyet ve medya, feminist örgütlenmeler, MEDİZ (Kadınların Medya izleme Grubu), ağ toplulukları, bilgisayar dolayımlı iletişim
