The Arrival of Sound Cinema in the Provinces of Turkey (1930-1945)

The transition to sound cinema profoundly affected the production, exhibition and viewing practices of film all over the world. In Turkey, a country with an emerging domestic film industry, this period was marked by issues regarding the infrastructural challenges and the language barrier related to sound film screening. Audiences faced difficulties while watching films in foreign languages. Low provincial investments in Turkey’s film industry led to a series of difficulties in relation to the sound exhibition infrastructure. The language barrier was a significant concern for cinema entrepreneurs in the provinces. The regions outside the big cities such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir are considered as provinces and it is aimed to reveal the prominent actors, dynamics and results in the process of transition to sound in the geographies outside the center. In this research, primary sources consisting of newspapers, magazines and documents from the Presidential Republican Archives are used in addition to various secondary sources on the subject. In this article, the arrival of sound cinema in Turkey in 1930-1945, the change in film exhibition and viewing practices, and the challenges of this process in provincial cinemas are discussed. The role of the People’s Houses in the dissemination of sound cinema in the provinces is examined through the example of the Zonguldak People’s House.

Le passage au cinéma sonore a profondément affecté les pratiques de production, de projection et de visionnage des films dans le monde entier. En Turquie dont l’industrie cinématographique nationale n’était pas développée, cette période a été marquée par les problèmes liés à la barrière linguistique à laquelle se heurtait le public face aux films projetés en langues étrangères, ainsi que par les problèmes liés à l’infrastructure de projection de films sonores dans les salles de cinéma. Comme le capital cinématographique dans les provinces turques n’était pas si fort, il était très difficile d’établir une infrastructure de film sonore pour les exploitants des salles de cinéma en province. En outre, la barrière de la langue était un enjeu majeur pour eux. Dans cet article, les régions situées en dehors des grandes villes telles qu’Istanbul, Ankara et Izmir sont considérées comme province, et l’objectif est de révéler les principaux acteurs, les dynamiques et les conséquences de ce processus dans les géographies périphériques. Dans cette étude, on utilise des sources primaires constituées de journaux, magazines et documents dans les archives de la présidence de la République, ainsi que diverses sources secondaires sur le sujet. Cet article traite de l’arrivée du cinéma sonore en Turquie entre 1930 - 1945, qui a modifié les pratiques de projection et de visionnage des films, et des défis que ce processus a posé aux cinémas de province. Le rôle des Maisons du Peuple (Halkevleri) dans la diffusion du cinéma sonore en province et les limites de ce processus sont discutés à travers l’exemple de la Maison du Peuple de Zonguldak.

Sesli sinemaya geçiş tüm dünyada filmlerin üretim, gösterim ve seyir pratiklerini derinden etkilemiştir. Yerli film endüstrisi gelişkin olmayan Türkiye’de bu döneme sinema salonlarında sesli film gösterim altyapısına ilişkin gündemler ile yabancı dillerde gösterilen filmler karşısında seyircilerin karşılaştığı dil bariyeri ile ilgili sorunlar damga vurur. Sinema sermayesi taşrada güçlü olmadığı için buradaki salonların sesli film altyapısı kurmaları oldukça zor olur. Ayrıca dil bariyeri taşradaki salon işletmecileri için bir endişe kaynağıdır. Makalede İstanbul, Ankara ve İzmir gibi büyük şehirler dışında kalan bölgeler taşra olarak ele alınmış ve merkez dışında kalan coğrafyalarda bu süreçte öne çıkan aktörler, dinamikler ve sonuçların ortaya konulması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada konu ile ilgili çeşitli ikinci el kaynakların yanı sıra döneme ait gazete, dergi ve Cumhurbaşkanlığı Cumhuriyet Arşivi belgelerinden oluşan birincil kaynaklar kullanılmıştır. Bu çalışma, 1930-1945 arasında sesli sinemanın Türkiye’ye gelişi, film gösterim ve seyir pratiklerinin değişimi ile bu sürecin taşra sinemaları için yarattığı güçlükleri ele almaktadır. Makalede, taşrada sesli sinemanın yaygınlaşmasında halkevlerinin rolüne ve Zonguldak Halkevi örneği üzerinden bu süreçteki zorluklara değinilmektedir.
