Abstract

Understanding Health LiteracyThis article aims to define and reveal the importance of health literacy by drawing a general framework of the subject. To this end, primarily the concept of health literacy is described and classified, following a discussion of the measurement and evaluation methods; problems encountered in the case of inadequate health literacy and suggestions for improved health literacy are also presented. It has also been emphasized that the development of media literacy will empower the individual who is face to face with a high quantity flow of health information whose accuracy or falsehood is impossible to be questioned. Health literacy is not only about individuals’ understanding of health-related information, but it also covers many important subjects required for positive health outcomes such as evaluation of the acquired information, application of the given treatments, and understanding health care system. As a consequence of inadequate health literacy, variety of problems will be detrimental to health of the individual, such as misunderstanding the health related information and interruption of the treatment, and therefore, it includes many important issues such as ineffective use of the resources allocated to health, and increased costs of treatment. Conducting effective research on the health literacy which has a multi-dimensional structure, trying to find out the most suitable application methods; and also scrutinizing health information which circulates in the media will contribute to the development of health literacy.
