What do journalistic autobiographies tell us?

Abstract

Journalists’ autobiographies or memoirs, with a broader definition, “ego-documents” are among the essential sources in the history of journalism. Although its subjectivity is a matter of debate, the subject itself and how it constructs itself within the text are worth examining in terms of journalism and news sociology. This study focused on three autobiographical books published in the same period, discussed similar issues and aimed to describe the current political-economic media climate with a comparative reading. The analysis showed that the journalists described the media environment which excludes them as the words “capitulated”, “hostage”, and “obedient”. Journalists point to media owners and patronage relations as the primary responsible for the current climate as well as the media policies of the government. In addition, it was observed that, instead of questioning the system, they reduced the lack of resistance and solidarity to individual moral problems and that they neglected the reasons that created this system. All three narratives focused on their own achievements, thus, the debate on the social, cultural, and political dimensions remained limited due to the lack of self-criticism.

Que nous disent les autobiographies journalistiques?

Abstract

Les autobiographies ou mémoires de journalistes, au sens large, les « ego-documents » font partie des sources essentielles de l'histoire du journalisme. Malgré les débats sur la subjectivité, le sujet et la manière dont ce dernier se construit dans le récit sont cruciaux pour le journalisme et la sociologie de l’information. Cette étude se concentrant sur trois livres autobiographiques publiés dans la même période et traitant de questions similaires vise à décrire le climat économico-politique du media actuel avec une lecture comparative. L’analyse montre que les journalistes ont décrit l'environnement médiatique qui les exclut avec des mots tels que « capitulé », « pris en otage » et « obéissant ». Ils ont principalement accusé les propriétaires des médias et leur relation clientéliste, à part les politiques médiatiques du gouvernement. Et, ils ont réduit les difficultés à des problèmes moraux individuels au lieu de remettre en question le système. Les trois récits se sont concentrés sur leurs propres réalisations, ainsi, le débat sur les dimensions sociales, culturelles et politiques est resté limité en raison du manque d’un regard autocritique.

Otobiyografik Gazetecilik Anlatıları Bize Ne Söylüyor?

Abstract

Gazetecilerin otobiyografileri veya anıları, daha geniş bir tanımla “ben anlatıları” gazetecilik tarihinin temel kaynaklarındandır. Sübjektifliği tartışma konusu olsa da,öznenin kendisi ve kendisini metinde nasıl inşa ettiği gazetecilik ve haber sosyolojisi açısından incelemeye değerdir. Aynı dönemde yayınlanan üç otobiyografik kitaba odaklanan ve benzer konuları ele alan bu çalışma, medyanın güncel ekonomi politik iklimini karşılaştırmalı bir okumayla betimlemeyi amaçlamıştır. Analiz, gazetecilerin kendilerini dışlayan medya ortamını “teslim olan”, “rehin alınan” ve “itaatkâr” gibi sözcüklerle tanımladıklarını göstermiştir. Gazeteciler, iktidarın medya politikalarının yanı sıra mevcut iklimin birincil sorumluları olarak medya sahiplerini ve patronaj ilişkilerini işaret etmektedirler. Bunun yanı sıra sistemi sorgulamak yerine direniş ve dayanışma eksikliğini bireysel ahlaki problemlere indirgedikleri, bu sistemi yaratan sebepleri ihmal ettikleri gözlenmiştir. Her üç anlatı da kendi başarılarına odaklanmış, mesleğe dair sosyal, kültürel ve politik tartışma öz eleştiri eksikliği nedeniyle sınırlı kalmıştır.
